Health Insurance
Under Massachusetts law, all students are required to be covered by comprehensive medical insurance.
Access to MIT Health is included with tuition, however, all MIT students are required to have comprehensive health insurance coverage to is required to cover services such as hospitalization.
Comprehensive coverage can be purchased through:
- MIT (All students are automatically enrolled in the MIT Student Health Insurance Plan (MIT SHIP) and must waive coverage each year by the deadline if not needed) – The cost for the student is paid by MIT, WHOI Academic Programs (APO) or an external fellowship. Students must pay for any family members enrolled. For information regarding cost and coverage, click here.
- If you have insurance through another source (such as partner’s plan, parent’s plan, Navy, etc.), you must waive MIT SHIP during the waiver period.
Waiving MIT Insurance Coverage
For students arriving in the fall term: You will waive coverage for the entire year during the annual open enrollment/waiver period (July 15–August 15).
For students arriving in the spring term:
You will waive coverage during the spring enrollment/waiver period (December 15–January 15).
