Policy for Joint Program Intercampus Travel Reimbursement for Students
For WHOI-Based Students: Students whose advisors are based at WHOI and live in the WHOI area can request travel reimbursement to travel to MIT for academic purposes, JP events, and for medical appointments. Students expecting to take more than three trips/month by commuter bus are expected to purchase commuter passes.
For MIT-Based students: Students living in the Cambridge area and 1) whose advisors are based at MIT, or 2) with WHOI advisors, and who are still taking classes full-time (usually during the first two years) can request travel to WHOI on days when the JP bus is not in service. Travel may be requested for academic purposes or for JP events.
Additional Summer Policy: Any student living in WHOI transient housing who was taking courses in Cambridge during the previous spring may request reimbursement for up to one round-trip per week to the Cambridge area. Students expecting to take more than three trips/month by commuter bus are expected to purchase commuter passes.
After completing required coursework in Cambridge, students with WHOI-based advisors who have been granted exceptions to reside in WHOI transient housing are not eligible for travel reimbursement.
