Students can reserve space for housing with either MIT in Cambridge or with WHOI in the Woods Hole area.

Joint Program Interdisciplinary Statement

The goal of the MIT/WHOI Joint Program is for each student to achieve his or her full intellectual potential in the chosen area of study and research, either within the more traditional disciplines of ocean sciences and engineering or within interdisciplinary studies incorporating two or more disciplines.

Computer Loans

To facilitate the education of graduate students, the WHOI Academic Programs Office provides interest-free loans for the purchase of personal computers to students during their first two years of enrollment in the MIT/WHOI Joint Program or WHOI Graduate Program.

Thesis Submission

After a student's successful dissertation defense, the final version of a thesis must be submitted to both the student's home department at MIT and WHOI's Academic Programs Office within two weeks of the defense date.

Deferral of Admission

If an applicant to the MIT/WHOI Joint Program is made an offer of admission, and accepts that offer, he/she is able to defer entrance to the Joint Program for up to one year without reapplying.

Thesis Committee Member Travel Reimbursement

The WHOI Academic Programs Office will pay reasonable costs for one outside member to attend the thesis proposal defense and the thesis defense.

Childbirth Accommodation Policy

A student anticipating childbirth is eligible for a period of up to eight weeks of Childbirth Accommodation at either MIT or WHOI.
